Toile de Jouy has become a generic term meaning all monochrome printed fabrics regardless of the design’s origin. Historically, Toiles de Jouy are the printed fabrics made by Oberkampf at Jouy-en-Josas during the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a whole other conversation that deserves alot of time and attention. But mostly, Toile fabrics were a way to depict life, scenes of the every day activities, farmers, laborers, etc. The Pastoral scenes are without any doubt the most well known Toiles de Jouy. These pastoral scenes were inspired by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The country was idealized: scenes of dancing, hunting, farming, children playing or numerous animals ... cows, goats, hens and ducks!
