Open Minded ... Shabby Chic or Gustavian?

Late last night I had an Aha Moment about Gustavian furniture.
The Simplicity of Painted furniture ... the predecessor of Shabby Chic.

I LOVE painted furniture, Shabby Chic ... Gustavian!

Hello!!

One thing about this business is that you are inundated by so many different furniture periods and styles that you begin to appreciate them all and kind find a home for them ... or room for them in your home.

In my twenties I would have told you that I didn't like "modern" ... which is funny, because it was all around me and now I love the "mid-century modern"!

If you would have asked me how I felt about Swedish design, I probably would have said that it's okay, but I like something with a little more warmth.  What did I know?

Do you find that as you study and experience more that you actually find yourself a little more openminded?

I won't bore you with all the "history" but here is a Kim'ism of Gustavian furniture!

Early Gustavian was inspired by French Rococco and Italian design ... but the Swedes took these influences and created a more restrained version more suitable to them than the over-embellished styles.

"The most typical colors from the Gustavian period were grey, yellow ochre and a Swedish blue. When one finds a Swedish antique with an original finish in tact you can see the difference immediatley. These pieces of Swedish furniture have SOUL. " More info here

I believe there is a place for all styles within a home.  That is what makes it more exciting for me.  Bringing in what you love, no matter the style.  Design has no rules.

Just like life ... there is room for everyone and every furniture style!

Making the World More Beautiful.  One Room at a Time.

  4. learned a lot as always Kim, thanks. I am definitely open-minded about different kinds of pieces for my home. That's why it's so hard for me to answer the question, "what's your design style?'! I appreciate all sorts of design and hence the variety of blogs I follow shows that too, I may not have Gustavian piece yet, but if I do find one with the right price and function, I would definitely grab it. :-)

  7. I agree! My style favorites have evolved over the years! I now have no favorite! If a piece catches my eye, I find it finds a place in our home! The Swedish designs and pieces are amazing and Loi from Tone on Tone has inspired me greatly.
